Imbolc or Imbolg, also called Saint Brigid’s Day, is a Gaelic traditional festival. It marks the beginning of spring, and for Christians, it is the feast day of Saint Brigid, Ireland’s patroness saint. It is held on 1 February, which is about halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. This is the time of year that represents new life, growth and the anticipation of longer days.
The most popular tradition is the weaving of St. Bridget’s cross and hanging it in the house for protection.
This representation of Imbolc is a deconstructed St Bridget’s cross with shades of green and texture created with relief print to depict the overlapping of the rushes that are used to weave this cross. Spring is illustrated by the addition of snowdrops, the very first flowers courageous enough to push through the soil in chilly February in Ireland. The final result is a 7 colour screen print, foiled with pewter-coloured foil and finished with two blocks of textured relief print.
